Consumers Left to Choose between BT and Virgin Media in Broadband Battle

Auto Date Thursday, February 11th, 2010

British Telecom is all set to launch a special fibre optic broadband product with a promise of providing a download speed of 40MB and an upload speed of 10MB.

As part of its marketing strategy, BT telecom has positioned its product in direct comparison to a similar fast broadband product provided by Virgin Media, another major player in the British market, claiming that it is a faster and cheaper option and will actually save up to £7.47.

The fibre optic product of BT is named Infinity and is being compared to Virgin Media’s XXL service. Virgin Media has sought to highlight some of the discrepancies in this comparison stating that it offers unlimited download options, whereas BT offers only a 20GB data cap in its Option 1 package. Virgin Media users have the added benefit of not having to hire a phone line, while BT users will need to do so. Another discrepancy is that Virgin Media XXL offers a 12-month contract, whereas BT has on offer an 18-month contract.

British Telecom plans to serve 4 million users in the first stage. In the second stage, it will expand the service to another 6 million users by the middle of this year.

Virgin Media has boldly said that there is actually no comparison between a yet-to-be-launched service by BT promising 40MB downloading speeds and an existing XXL service providing 50MB speeds. To stay one step ahead of its competitor, Virgin Media has already hinted at a future 200MB service although specific details are not available at the time of writing. Reduce Your Phone Bill with Cheap Calls to Pakistan

Auto Date Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Not being very technical or a big follower of the latest technological news, I was completely unaware until not long ago that you can use the same ‘VoIP’ technology to make cheap calls to Pakistan from your very own cell phone. Mobile VoIP is a relatively new technology which has taken by surprise the telephone companies, and not least the mobile phone networks. Its popularity is on the up with the increasing pervasiveness of broadband connections. It has proved to be an game-changing technological advancement which has created a new mode of telecommunication by exploiting the internet. VOIP is an abbreviated form of Voice Over Internet Protocol.

With the emergence of mobile VoIP technology, ringing people has never been so simple and cheap. It’s now not hard to make a local, long distance, and overseas calls from your mobile by tapping into a wi-fi connection or using a VoIP phone with a wired internet connection.

One of the most significant improvements of VoIP technology is the various new and improved features it allows you to enjoy, such as simple to set up conference calling. There are many much improved services offered by the various VOIP service providers. For example, there is voice mail facility, 3-way conference, speed dialling, call forwarding, simultaneous ring, call waiting, caller ID, call return, caller ID block, anonymous call rejection, an interesting feature of do not disturb, and last number dial. A great thing about VoIP is that you can often benefit from a host of additional services for no extra charge.

What Benefit Will You Get From GPS?

Auto Date Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Global Positioning System is a navigational aid, funded and controlled by the U.S.
Department of Defense. Since GPS systems utilize 24 satellites that orbit the earth
in a grid pattern, there are always six to eight satellites that are able to
communicate with any given position on earth at any given time. What this does is
give the average consumer the power to find any place on earth at any time day or
night. Just think of the benefits this provides for a wide variety of the public.

Some of the benefits we might receive from GPS are:

Fuel economy: If you want to maximize your fuel economy you’ll need a good
GPS system. Saving money at the pump as well as wear and tear on your vehicle
should be one of the main reasons why you would want a good GPS system in your
vehicle. Accurate driving directions not only will save you time in your daily
travels, but also will save you substantial gas money when travelling from place
to place. This is especially important for delivery and courier services.

Travel directions: Utilizing a GPS system will give you accurate directions
for travel. Weather you are travelling locally, across country, or globally, you will
get accurate direction and constant monitoring of your current position. I wouldn’t
think of taking another family vacation without a GPS system in my vehicle.

Recreation: Weather you are camping, or hiking, a hand held GPS unit will
benefit you. I can’t imagine going camping in the middle of the woods and not
being able to find my way out. The news is filled with daily reports of people
(or kids) that go hiking in the woods or the desert, and can’t find their way back
home or to their campsite. A GPS unit is the answer for these people.

Maritime: If you have ever watched one of the popular fishing shows on T.V.,
or are a fisherman or sailor yourself, then you know how a GPS unit will benefit you.
Getting lost at sea or on a large lake would not be fun. The other side of the coin
is the fisherman, say there is a great hotspot on any given lake in the world, that
specific spot can be saved in your GPS system and found again at any time. This
could be beneficial to the recreational or professional fisherman.

Tracking: If you run a courier business, rental business, or just plain delivery
service, and need to keep track of several vehicles, then GPS is what you need. Keeping
track of your vehicles will keep your overhead down. The other end of tracking is keeping
track of a family member or child, a GPS tracking system will aid in your efforts.

I have over 25 years of automotive repair experience. I know quite alot about everything that
has to do with your auto. I am ASE certified as well as GM certified. I am originally from
Wisconsin, born and raised, lived there for 38 years. I’ve spent many years in the summer-humid
/winter-icy/snowy climate and have dealt with not only repair conditions there but also how to
drive properly in those conditions. Fuel economy is probably the most important element to saving
money today, and how you drive or how your vehicle performs plays a big part in that. I now have
lived in Phoenix for the past 6 years, in the middle of the desert where it reaches up to 115
degrees on a summer day. I’ve seen it all as far as vehicle maintenance and care goes and can
help with any problem by email or by visiting my website at http://www.your-auto-repair-help.com/gps.html

Concierge on your phone

Auto Date Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

The Constellation Ayxta, made by the Hampshire-based company Vertu, contains no jewels or precious metals, but is constructed from a mixture of stainless steel, leather, ceramic and comes with a scratch-free sapphire glass display.

To put this new mobile telephone in context, most people in the UK take two months to earn the amount of money that this phone costs when you buy it. The amusing fact about this mobile is that it doesn’t come with any telephone calls, sms messages or even data minutes included! Unlike my current Orange mobile phone, thankfully.

The Vertu Constellation Ayxta’s high price is only partly justified because of its top-end materials and the fact it is handmade in Britain.

There are two impressive services which do come built into this phone, that potentially make it eight times more desirable than an Apple iPhone.

One is the Vertu Concierge service. A button programmed into all Vertu handset which allows users to contact a 24-hour concierge service, which connects the user to a “lifestyle manager” who can book plane tickets, order presents or sort out a gardener any time of the day.

A completely new service for Vertu customers is the other feature - The City Brief. The Vertu mobile handset uses its built in GPS unit to work out where you are located in the world and provide you with localised information on things like the best local restaurants, the pick of the weeks shows and events and similar localised information. Businessmen will also be informed of the local business etiquette.

The Role of WIFi Cell Phone in Wireless Networks

Auto Date Friday, August 28th, 2009

A wireless network is a type of network that enhances any type of communication between two devices without the use any type of wires or codes. Most of these types of networks are associated with telecommunication where by inter-connections can be implemented without the use of cable. One of the best examples to be used is the Cell phone with wifi. Information is generally transmitted with a remote system which uses electro magnetic waves like in the telecommunication wireless networks.

Wifi enables wireless network connection between computers with the internet or other gargets like Cell phone with wifi, capability function to transmit radio waves that can be picked with wifi transmitters and transmitted to other computers or cellular phones. The Cell phone with wifi, have a type of wireless networks that is capable of connecting two devices within a limited radius. This type of network is normally referred to as a wireless personal area network (W.P.A.N) the best example used to explain this is by the use of a Bluetooth device which can facilitate connectivity between your phone and a printer device, head set, or connectivity between two phones for exchange of data or media files.

In these modern days inventions, there has been the production of smart phones, mobile phone networks that are capable of carrying data like a computer with an additional capability of being used as a telephone to have conversations, send e-mail, faxes between two individuals as a means of communication. All these are achieved because of the base station, switching and support system.

Mobile Broadband Industry Growing Despite Economic Downturn

Auto Date Friday, August 21st, 2009

The Communications Market Report, an annual report published by Ofcom has recently been released. The report mainly addresses the standing of the TV, broadband, radio, telecoms and mobile industry in the UK.

The £52 billion communications market industry has been intensely scrutinised by Ofcom and the results show that communication is a major component of people’s lives in the UK. The report shows that people are more interested in having mobile and broadband support than spending money on eating out or travel. This effect is more apparent when the world is going through a severe economic turmoil.

May alone saw almost a quarter of a million contracts for mobile broadband services being concluded. Moreover, 12 per cent of UK homes had mobile connection installed by the end of the first three months of the year. Another thing that solidifies the advent of mobile broadband revolution in the UK is that more than half of these homes got a mobile broadband connection in addition to the existing fixed-line broadband connection; presumably, many households having taken advantage of the laptop deals by the service provider. This shows that people consider both of them as essential services now.

The report has therefore confirmed that people in the UK are not scared to splurge on broadband or mobile connections even in the wake of the recent economic recession. However, they are smartly opting for packaged services that guarantee better offers.

Make Traveling A Lot Less Stressful With The Right Type Of Car GPS

Auto Date Friday, April 17th, 2009

Navigating using maps can be very frustrating especially if you are doing so while driving your car. This becomes even stressful when you are driving all alone in a strange territory. Sometimes, however, having someone with you won’t help either, because more often than not, your companion would end up confusing you more than helping you navigate the road.

But traveling need not always be this difficult. It doesn’t even have to be stressful. If you think it is the map that is causing you your problems, then better get away with it and throw it outside your vehicle’s window. Instead, go get a new car GPS receiver and use it instead of the map.

Car GPS Devices

Simply said, a car GPS device is a GPS receiver especially designed for cars and their navigation systems. Like all other types of GPS receivers, car GPS devices can also receive signals from GPS satellites and can use the information carried by these signals to determine its current location. But because they are meant to be used on moving vehicles, they must be stuffed with features specific to vehicle navigations systems.

In particular, car GPS devices must be able to give you the best possible route toward a particular destination. It must also be able to recalculate your route in case you miss a particular route instruction. It must also have a text and/or voice system for giving directions. Other basic features that all car GPS devices must have are:

• Map storage system

• Screen or display that can handle images of more than 320×240 pixels in size at a resolution and brightness suitable for driving.

• Address book for storing frequently visited addresses and points of interest

• Detachable or external antenna for better GPS visibility

Now, there are a lot of car GPS devices of different kinds and brands available for every type and brand of car there is today. Because of this, you may find it difficult to select the particular car GPS that would perfectly fit your needs, should you want to experience the functionality of one.

In general, however, you’ve got two options should you want to travel with a car GPS device. The first option is to purchase a vehicle with built-in or fixed car GPS system. The other option is to purchase a portable car GPS device suitable for your car.

Buying a Vehicle with a Fixed Car GPS Device

Built-in or fixed car GPS devices can usually be found only on brand new luxury vehicles. As such, you definitely wouldn’t see this option viable if you don’t have the cash to purchase a luxury vehicle. But for those who can easily afford one, this can be the best option because the GPS device is already integrated in the vehicle’s system. This removes all the hassle of installing the car GPS device on the vehicle and loading additional navigation software on the system.

Buying a Portable Car GPS Device

For those who simply can’t afford a new luxury vehicle but still wants to enjoy the functionality of a car GPS system, the viable option for him is to purchase a portable car GPS device. Now, for this type of car GPS device, you are again given two options: a portable car GPS preloaded with maps or a unit that would require you to transfer map data from your PC to the device.

Since the car GPS device needs to have a map in either option, choosing a car GPS unit preloaded with maps would seem to be a wiser choice. But while this type of car GPS device will save you from all the hassles of loading maps to the system, it also costs higher ($1,000-$1,500) than the other option.

The greatest advantage of portable car GPS units that requires map transfers, on the other hand, is their price, which would generally sell at the $500 to $800 range. Installing the system on your car, however, may be quite difficult and laborious.

Korean Broadband to Reach Break-Neck Speeds

Auto Date Friday, February 6th, 2009

In UK, Virgin Media recently launched their 50 Mb fixed-line broadband service and it was quite an event. And some Bournemouth residents in UK became privileged users of the superfast broadband, connected to the newly launched 100Mb fibre optic trial. Meanwhile, what are the other broadband leaders in the world doing? Korea, being the tech-savvy country that it is, is preparing to launch a mega fast 1 Gb service.

Korean Communications Commission has announced that the new service would advance its IT infrastructure at the cost of US $24.6 billion and would create a huge number of jobs, estimated at 120,000.

Broadband speed of up to 100 MB, which has been a blessing to the hardcore gaming community in Korea, is turning out to be very hard to replicate in the UK.

Additionally, even the wireless broadband service in Korea is set for a major upgrade. The Korean Communications Commission has announced that the service would soon be able to provide speeds up to 10 MB.

If you are not sure, where the UK stands in the broadband speed race, do give your own connection a speed test! Clearly, it is time to rethink our broadband strategy.

What Is A VoIP Gateway?

Auto Date Sunday, August 31st, 2008

The meshing of old analog telephone connections and VoIP service means that there has to be something that sort of brings the two together so that customers don’t have to spend a lot of money to get the new devices needed for VoIP service. A VoIP gateway acts as a bridge between the old and the new, allowing customers to use their same phone lines, their same phones, but still enjoy the benefits of modern technology. A VoIP gateway is essentially responsible for connecting your VoIP network to your public telephone network so that you can keep using features on your old telephone but also use the VoIP network.

The VoIP gateway aides in call detection and call origin so you can get the calls when they come through. Live VoIP requires that there is a gateway or bridge between the old telephone mechanics and the new VoIP technology. This gateway will become even easier in the future as the newer technology becomes more common than the old. The VoIP gateway is also partially responsible for converting the analog to a digital voice so that voice quality remains clear and true. Without a gateway you may not get your calls and voice conversion wouldn’t be what it is now!

A gateway and a router are really what make it all happen so that a consumer can take advantage of the great quality and services that VoIP has to offer. When you sign up for VoIP service you may get more information about the specific gateway that your provider uses and they’ll be able to give you more detailed and in-depth information about the technology associated with it. The technology is so fascinating that it’s hard not to stop and listen to all the details!
