Chris Bell, WSOP Bracelet Winner

Auto Date Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Chris Bell, a professional poker online player from Raleigh, N.C., won the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha High-Low Split championship on Monday morning to take home a WSOP (sponsored by Everest Poker) gold bracelet and $327,040 in first-place prize money. This marked Bell’s first career WSOP gold bracelet victory, following several noteworthy wins and cashes in other major poker online tournaments, as well as brutally disappointing stretches of failure. Bell earned a well-deserved and long overdue victory, for which he collected $327,040 in prize money. Bell faced Dan Shak heads up for the title. Shak, a Bryn Mawr, Pa., resident, has been playing poker seriously for about six years. Shak’s biggest victory took place earlier this year when he won the Aussie Millions Championship, and he also was the co-winner of the inaugural Ante-Up for Africa charity tournament in 2007, as he and Brandon Moran donated the entire cash prize for first and second place to international relief effort in Darfur. Bell overcame a 2.5-to-1 chip deficit when he was heads-up against Shak. The final duel lasted about 90 minutes and ended when Shak was all in with flush and low draws. Bell, however, had a lock for the high with a full house, and dodged the low draw to secure the title. Shak’s second-place result netted him $202,142. Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott, a former WSOP bracelet winner from Hull, England, finished third to win $150,925, while Joe Ritze, from Hamilton, Ohio was fourth for $113,444. Eight-time gold bracelet winner Erik Seidel, from Las Vegas, Nev., was fifth, Leif Force, from Tallahassee, Fla., was sixth, former gold bracelet winner Rob Hollink, from Groningen, Holland, was seventh, three-time bracelet winner Perry Green, from Anchorage, Alaska, was eighth, and Jeremy Harkin, from Troutdale, Ore., was ninth. The top 27 finishers in the 284-player field collected prize money. Aside from those who made the final table, former WSOP gold bracelet finishers who cashed in this event included “Miami” John Cernuto (12th), Dan Heimiller (19th), and Barry Greenstein (24th).

Free a Sky Lantern for Your Beloved

Auto Date Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Moments of enjoyment, celebration and entertainment all have one thing in common, sky lanterns. Correctly so. No wonder they have turned out to be accessories at social gathering, for the main reason that they make a glittery display and are very theatrical and dramatic. Even a lone sky lantern will be a thoughtful approach of observing the demise of a cherished one.

Loss is unavoidable one and all, young and old, has to cope with at some situation in their lives. Just as it is written into our makeup that we should feel love and hunger it’s a fraction of the human form to have to live through that type of sorrow in addition to distress. Death is odd with its overwhelming mystery, it is often incredibly tricky to digest it and several wrestle to understand the conclusiveness of it. Varied people also have extremely unusual ways of coping with it, some thwart it out, other individuals plunge themselves in their grief, others live through delayed grief, and discover themselves mourning a lot of years later.

For a post all this looks to be an offensively morose and sombre subject but there is a point to it. Still I wouldn’t for a moment put forward that sky lanterns create death more bearable, they do however bring varied individuals together, offer them the space and time to peacefully ponder over their grief.

Liberating sky lanterns following a commemoration or funeral, in fact is often a wonderful mode of paying tribute to a life that has been lost, and in addition, it is the objective representation of an emotional discharge. This is like you can be letting go a tiny fraction of your sorrow, or a small part of the person you’re mourning, as you let the lantern take off. This sanitising result is, in fact, an element of the sky lantern’s history.
A sky lantern will not disconnect grief instantly, nevertheless it will eventually give the strength to meet it head on and to start- very slowly and very surely- to come to terms with it, and to-in a very tiny gesture- allow it to depart.

On the Bubble

Auto Date Monday, April 26th, 2010

In a poker tournament, the payout only goes to a certain number of players, usually the top four or five places. Being “on the bubble” in an online pokertournament means that there is one more player involved than is gong to get paid-if the top four players get cash and there are five players left, then that table is on the bubble.

The pressure’s on when you’re playing on the bubble, because you’re so close to being in the money, but one wrong move and you’ll end up walking away empty-handed. Players tend to respond to the bubble in one of two ways.

Tightening up: One type of player will shut down his game and hope to live long enough to watch someone else get bumped. Usually the low stack or next to the low stack, this online poker player will be loathe to put any of his stack at risk. Some big stacks will also do this, since they have enough chips to survive the blinds until someone gets knocked out.

Playing Looser: The other way to approach the bubble is to loosen your game and play more aggressively. Many players will take advantage of the situation and will use it to take the blinds of the players who don’t want to risk any more chips than they have to.

Playing Poker Listening to Hiphop

Auto Date Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

If you have to poll the music listened to by the most number of poker players, something in me imagines that the number one answer would be hiphop. There’s something about the attitude of rap that fits so well with the notion of the game of poker. Lyrics about getting money, about being motivated, crushing your oppressors, making moves to rise to the top of an industry of othersall of it comes together in a nice motivational way to maximize attitude, will, and total yield. In particular, rappers like Jay Z, Lil Wayne, Wu Tang Clan, Three Six Mafia, and others could be considered quite excellent material to put on your iPod and bring to the table for hype and pushing yourself to take the game to the next level. Another thing I like about the influence of rap on my poker online game is the pronounced rhythm and the bass. The basic beats and body focused affect of simply moving patterns causes a kind of centralizing of the mind and body. It motivates and focuses at once. Though not all poker players might be into the style of rap, a similar effect could be brought about from electronic music, where the synthetic movement helps the arms develop patterns, centralizing in the sound. We can’t all be rap fans, but we can all push forward in the will to making money, and being the boss.

Play Poker with U. S. Dollars

Auto Date Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

If you are a resident of the United States, you are probably more comfortable playing your online poker using U.S. Dollars. Playing in USD raises a few very specific issues that are not pertinent to other currencies. Let’s start at the beginning to know whether you can play your favorite game with your natural currency. First of all, the United States currently has severe restrictions against online poker and gambling in general. Only a very few online casinos are willing to accept American players at all. Casinos will typically designate whether or not they accept players from the United States prominently on their home page. You need to check carefully before deciding to play at an online casino. Only poker players that accept players from the United States will accept US Dollars. It serves as a matter of convenience for United States gaming establishments, as well as a final check to assure that foreign based casinos are not accidently accepting players from the United States. There are, of course, a few online casinos that you can access as a U.S. player. You need to remember that your options are limited as a player based in the United States, and that legislation may change unexpectedly in the future. If you are seriously concerned about your ability to play in United States Dollars, you may find it easier to play in a brick and mortar casino.

Using those Points

Auto Date Friday, February 26th, 2010

When you play poker online for any amount of time you’ll inevitably notice that you start accumulating points for playing at a certain site. Well, me an Uncle Scrooge and all, decided that there has to be a way to accumulate points faster to get more out of them than just more points or easy buy-ins to satellite tournaments.

And after trying a few different things, I’ve finally found a way, and it involves playing poker Sit-n-Gos, and unregistering from the satellite after you win the buy in.

So first things first, you have to find a Sit-n-Go that offers a points buy in to a bigger satellite. Say you play a 50 point game an it buys you into a 275 point game.

Well what you do is simply win the 50 point game, and then unregister from the 275 point game. Viola, 225 point profit. And you can keep doing this as long as you have points to do it with. Eventually, you’ll have enough points to start playing higher point buy in games. And you continue your cycle until you end up starting to get tournament credits.

Once you get to the point where you start earning poker online tournament credits, you can then use this in lieu of your normal bankroll to play in other tournaments that you normally wouldn’t be playing in following standard bankroll management advice.

Think of it as investment banking. You have all these points and it’ll take you forever to turn them into something of value if you just use them in the standard way.

Instead, you start using them to increase your bankroll because even if you use tournament dollars to play in a game, if you win you get paid out in real cash. callq tsrying to bet you off the pot especially if you’re showing “weakness” by calling. As long as the board doesn’t coordinate on the turn or river you should be golden.

There are only two things you should really be worried about the majority of the time. The board paring two aces and another card pairing. That would give your opponent a higher full house. But if the board isn’t paired and is fairly low and two aces happen to pop up, then get ready to ride the train right to value town.

Arguments for Only Ever Playing Online

Auto Date Thursday, February 18th, 2010

The level of comfort I find in playing online poker has pretty much at this point obliterated all will to go to live games. I used to find it excellent to ride around to local games in my area, or to take a weekend trip with some buddies and hit up Tunica or Vegas for some action, but at this point the level of ease of access and the endless action of the online circuit just seems too good to ever question.

I love being able to lay on my sofa and watch TV and eat or drink whatever I want off my own plates all while taking other people’s money playing poker online. Sure, there is a level of other kind of pleasure in sitting at a real table, seeing real faces, and handling the chips, but for the most part the ease of the online interaction is so convenient, it takes a monumental urge to get out to live games anymore.

In a way it’s just me being lazy, but really with the limited number of hours in a day, the pressures of all other daily habits, and so on, it’s a tough argument to get into the card rooms anymore. Embracing that distinction feels nice. Give online poker a shot.

Three Quick Tips for Dispensing Pull Tabs from Your Ticket Machine

Auto Date Monday, January 25th, 2010

Pull tabs (also known as charity tickets, ripoffs, etc.) are often sold by hand at bingos. However, some bingos will purchase a pulltab dispensing machine to create another selling station, or to help augment their staff. Also, many fraternal clubs and retail locations sell their charity tickets through ticket machines. For these groups that use these machines, here are 3 quick tips to keep your pulltabs dispensing properly.

1. If you mark your pulltabs to help keep your counts correct, make sure that you do not use a permanent marker. Permanent markers can cause pulltabs to stick together causing ticket jams.

2. Some people recommend fanning their tickets to clear dust and other debris from between them. However, fanning the pulltabs can cause more problems than it’s worth. Fanning can cause otherwise straight pulltabs to bend enough to create dispensing problems. We recommend that you only fan tickets that arrive bowed or bent, and then only to help straighten them.

3. Pulltabs can arrive bowed. Here’s the way we recommend you load bowed tickets in some of the major brands of ticket dispensing machines.

a. Maxim Pull Tab Machines: For Maxim machines, load tickets bow side down (like this “^”).

b. Technik Pull Tab Machines: For Technik machines, load tickets bow side up (like this “v”).

c. King’s Crown Pull Tab Machines: For King’s Crown (or Nevada Gold) ticket machines, load tickets bow side up (like this “v”).

Know when to Fold

Auto Date Friday, December 18th, 2009

A comfortable online poker bettor is a scary online poker bettor. While it’s a lot more fun to sniff out a bluff, it’s a lot more common (and a lot more useful) to be able to sense a player who is holding a winning hand. The way an opponent is moving his chips around a table is a great indicator of how he feels about his hand. If an opponent is flipping or tossing his chips into the pot, he’s probably overcompensating for how weak his hand is. That might save you from folding a decent hand. That can come in handy, but that’s small potatoes compared to what you save by not going into a hand against a guy who’s got the nuts. The player who pushes his chips into the hand isn’t anxious about what he’s doing. By sliding his chips into the hand, he’s trying to sneak in under your radar with slow, smooth movement and make calling his bet as easy for you to call as possible. Knowing that this guy’s got a winning poker online hand will help you fold that middle pair that you’re so in love with, which will save you a lot of chips in the long run.
