What is the Cost of College Tuition?

Auto Date Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

What is the average cost of college tuition? This is one question that most parents and future students ask themselves and need to know in order to plan for a college education.

The national average college tuition rate for public universities is $4,694 per year for in state residents. This figure includes both tuition rates and fees for a full time student.

The average college tuition rate at private colleges and universities is around $20,000 per year in tuition and fees.

Many students take advantage of the low tuition rates of two-year public colleges and junior colleges. The average tuition for a two year school is only $2,076 per year.

College Tuition Increase

While it is good to get an idea of the current cost of tuition, it is also important to understand the expected increase in tuition costs. Students who still have several years before entering college and their families should be keenly aware of the projected estimates rather than the current costs so that they can plan accordingly.

Tuition rates increase at about twice the general inflation rate. On average, tuition rates tend to increase about 8% per year. Some academic years see a greater increase than others and many economic factors come into play when a college decides to increase tuition.

For the school year 2005-2006 many colleges dramatically raised tuition rates. An example of such tuition hikes is at the University of Colorado where tuition rates have been raised for all of the system’s campuses. Tuition at the Boulder campus will go up by 27.8 percent, from $3,480 to $4,446. Other University of Colorado campuses will see a similar increase.

And now the good news…

Even though college tuition rates increase, more students than ever are benefiting from educational aid programs. According to a report from The College Board, “In 2003-04, the amount the average student actually paid for a public four-year institution, after receiving grant aid and education tax benefits, was about $1,300 per student.”

Government grants such as the pell grant provide funding for many college students. In fact for students who attend two-year colleges the grant award may cover the entire cost of tuition.

Scholarship programs awarded by colleges, businesses and non profit organizations are available to help students defray the cost of college tuition. There are many college scholarship programs available and it is becoming even easier to find these programs with the use of the internet.

With a combination of savings, financial aid, and scholarships many students today are able to afford college tuition and further their education.

Too Much to Read and Too Little Time

Auto Date Monday, March 30th, 2009

I spent the better part of 17 years in and out of higher education. Eleven of those years were invested in taking classes and pursuing degrees. In the process of having to read a lot of books and articles that I didn’t really have time to read, I began asking myself, “Isn’t there a more effective way to do this?” Like many of you, I had a life outside of the academic world. I had a family, jobs, responsibilities, and the desire to enjoy some portion of each week. Reading was necessary, but it wasn’t something I always enjoyed.

One day as I was sitting at my cubicle in the library, I glanced over at the three stacks of books I had accumulated. These books represented the precedent literature I needed to review before writing my dissertation. As the days went by, the stacks of books grew–I was adding books faster than I could review them! I was frustrated and ready to just give up.

That’s when I began developing the basic concepts that have resulted in the quickREAD method. That method now can be obtained in the form of an e-Book from my web site http://www.thinkezine.com.

Here is what I discovered. Even if I poured through every book page by page, my retention level wasn’t that great. So, if I wasn’t going to process it all, wasn’t there a more effective way to do it?

By using the quickREAD method, not only do you process the content, but you end up with a one-page summary of the main points of the text. The process works for books, individual chapters, and articles.

Basically, the process involves five steps:

1. Define the content. You must know what the book, chapter, or article is all about.

2. Look forward. Review the introductory material determining the author’s map for the text.

3. Look back. Review the summary material and identify the key terms and concepts.

4. Take note. Scan the entire text locating and reading about the key terms and concepts.

5. Summarize. When you can put into your own words the main points of the text, you have a basic knowledge of the content.

Does this process work? I have had students tell me that this process is one of the best things they learned in their entire academic careers. Others have thanked me for the hundreds of hours they have saved. You can do it too… it’s easy… it’s fun… and it makes you a more efficient learner. Give it a try!

Purchasing a for Sale Static Caravan

Auto Date Friday, March 27th, 2009

Its standard for static caravan proprietors to charter out their static caravan to establish extra income. The charge of additional income will depend on the amounts of calendar weeks per yr for which the caravan for sale is chartered for.

1 of the important considerations of renting out a static caravan for sale is the cost of selling the caravan to find tolerable levels of reservation. In that respect are 2 fundamental ways of marketing. 1st, is to self push the caravan to satisfy reservations. Second, the parkland operator will oftentimes market and lease your caravan for you. They will look after the full operation including organising bookings, defrayal, cleansing etc. The park operator will nonetheless get a commission percentage of the caravan sale as their fee.

If you are selling your caravan yourself there are distinct options:

Friends and Family ” simple and certain option
Word of mouth / repeat business ” no more marketing costs and painless
Localised Press Advertising - low-cost means of promoting
Nationalist Publications “e.g. Daltons Weekly
Private Website ” skilled and difficult to operate
National 3rd party websites ” can be cost effective

In addition of the commercializing, you will have to also deal with:

Advertising and Selling
Dealing with inquires via telephone or e-mail
Collecting and chasing bonds
Collecting and tracking balances
Confirming reservations and terms and considerations
Dealing with issues such as cancellations
Cleaning and care

The most price effective form of direct marketing for possessors is often acquaintances and family as this needs no financial outlay. Many people also like this approach as these users tend to be reliable.

Therefore caravan owners will choose for the park operator subleasing their static caravan for sale on their behalf, merely because it withdraws a lot of the work load associated with selling the caravan yourself.

Outsourcing Website Services - Can Your Business Benefit?

Auto Date Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Would it surprise you to know that Compaq Computer outsources?
How about Underwriters Laboratories? Gateway Computers?
Yes, even the Chicagoland Area Chamber of Commerce!
I have been involved with projects involving each one of these companies.
They all outsourced specific portions of their projects.
Even Hyperformance Media out-sources specific project requirements!
Every business does not know every other business.

What I mean is, your business can not know everything there is
to know about printing (for example). Therefore, in certain
situations, it would benefit your company to outsource this
service to some printing specialists. It could save you time,
money, and benefits, leaving your employees their time to
continue to do what they do best, their job - with minimum
productivity loss!

In this simple example you can begin to see the many benefits.

* You have professionals creating the desired product.

* They will do a better job in less time.

* No need to buy additional equipment or software.

* No set-up, no training, no lost time.

* No payroll, benefits, or accounting headaches.

* Your employees remain focused on their goals and your
business productivity!

These are just a few of the many reasons used to justify
the outsourcing of some projects versus attempting to do
everything in-house.

Your business website is a mission-critical marketing tool.
Used properly, your website should be your most outspoken
salesperson. Your business should be getting more business
from the Web, if not doing business on the Web.

The successful marketing of your business website should NOT
be taken lightly. Yes, your company now has a webmaster on
the payroll full-time, not to mention the design and development
staff, but is your web presence working? Are you achieving
results besides just looking good?

Outsourcing the marketing services of your website gives you
the experience you desire and the results you need. Your
business needs to be found yesterday! Your business needs
customers to grow, not just survive! Who has your market share?

Let’s talk about getting some of that back! Let’s talk about
what changes can be put in place to GET BUSINESS from your website.

Today, tomorrow, and every year going forward!

Thanks - and good luck with your promotions!

Employer convicted for deliberate deficiencies in health and safety

Auto Date Thursday, March 19th, 2009

An investigation by the HSE jointly with the Surrey police has found a pet food manufacturer to be responsible for the death of one of its employees. The company has been fined £157,500 on account of the conviction as the investigation revealed that the incident was easily foreseeable and hence preventable. The HSE explained that due to the employer’s disregard to safety, it was only a matter of time before something like this happened at the site.

The serious and deliberate safety deficiencies that existed at the site finally took the life of one of its employees, Marcus Snow, almost two years back. It was also found that there was not just one, but several instances where the health and safety regulations had been breached in the factory where the incident took place. Workplace training for staff and managers can help to reduce the risk of workplace accidents and avoid costly penalties imposed by the authorities. Visit the website all about nebosh training.

On the dreadful day, Mr. Snow was doing his regular work in the packing department, operating a machine which transfers empty cartons of dog food onto the conveyor. The machine got stuck and Mr. Snow crawled into it to check the reason of the jam and clear it off. However the pick-up unit of the machine descended and pushed him against the tray stack with considerable force. It was this continued pressure on the chest which caused asphyxiation and led to his death.

The investigation by the HSE found that the photoelectric light curtains at the both the entrance and exits of the machine were found to be disconnected. This allowed Mr. Snow’s entire body to get exposed to the machine’s interior and its dangerous parts. The lock on the access gate was also bypassed allowing the machine to operate even with its guard door open. It was found that there were other machines at the site with their safeguards bypassed, which was enough evidence to prove that the tampering with the machines was deliberate and the guilt fell squarely on the company.

The History of the Inaugural Ski Breaks to Chamonix

Auto Date Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

1770 was when the inaugural tourist accommodation opened in Chamonix. Before this Chamonix Mont Blanc France constituted a wild and sturdy rural village where the people hunted their animals and grew their own barley.

Barns at that time were used to farm dairy herds during the summer months. Their milk was preserved by changing it into cheese and butter and stored down in the valley for eating over the bleak winter times. Throughout the snow season the chalets were locked up, and any valued possessions were locked in a tiny shed.

Who invented catered chalet holidays is unknown, however it was probably some passionate chaps who realised a set up that was novel. With Erna Low it all began when she was a unhappy student who couldn’t visit her folks in Austria as often as she wished. So in 1931 she took a risk and put a advertisement in the papers to tempt clients on a skiing vacation. For only £15 they journeyed to and from the town, were provided with dinner and board in the only inn, and took ski equipment and instruction. Holidays were strenuous work, there were no skiing lifts, no safety bindings, just strong leather boots, but it was such a hit that she carried on taking groups on breaks, seeing to it that she employed superb hotels and ski instructors.

Catered chalet trips during the early years were a far cry to the luxury we get now. In the early days hot water was in limited supply, bathrooms had to be shared by all of the punters, and there was no a cook; all the guests needed to help out. It was a complete lottery as to who may share the accommodation for a vacation, you may be enjoyably surprised to encounter brand new acquaintances, or not gel with the group.

skiing holidays were later publicized on its new pluses. Your own chef, who served you breakfast and a four course dinner and made you afternoon tea, lots of hot water for bathing.

Miss Cleo Was a Fake… NO - Really? YES Maaan!

Auto Date Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

With her Jamaican accent Miss Cleo, a self proclaimed psychic and shaman would give you the answers to all life’s mysteries… for up to 9.95 per minute.

Turns out, Miss Cleo was not born in Jamaica at all. A birth certificate showing that Miss Cleo was in reality Youree Dell Harris, an American born in Los Angeles in 1962.

According to the FTC, the purportedly “renowned psychic” whose ads promote “free” readings to callers seeking advice, is the subject of a federal district court complaint filed by the Federal Trade Commission. The charges include:

-Deceptively misrepresent, in their advertising, that a “reading” will be provided at no cost.

- Through their agents, misrepresent the cost of the calls by claiming that consumers’ free minutes have not expired, that the consumer had been awarded additional free time, or that the consumer will not be charged while on hold.

- Falsely represent that consumers are legally required to pay for services even though, in many instances, no such legal obligation exists; and engages in unfair practices by frequently and repeatedly calling consumers, including consumers who had previously indicated they did not wish to receive such calls, and by failing to provide consumers with a reasonable method to stop such calls.

Our Advice…

This genre brings in the “riff-raff.” Anybody can call themselves a medium, get a 900 number/website & prey on the lonely, desperate people of the world. Save your money and time and AVOID at all costs people that call themselves psychics, palmists, clairvoyants, futurists, astrologists, numerologists, mediums, trancers or witches.

Unless…

They have a record over a period of time with a successful and satisfied client list. Most reputable firms will allow to check their references without question, email addresses, telephone numbers etc. If they don’t beware! Some people do have a gift in this area and can give you quality readings and enlightenment beyond what a “normal person” can do. It’s simply a matter of detecting the scams.

Most of the firms that offer psychic and horoscope readings online, the good ones anyway, have a very detailed personal information section that requires your input. Think of it like signing up for a personals site. The ones that require lots of information from you usually get the best results. This makes your reading more personal and specific. The bad ones will give you only canned replies and fluff.

Seven Card Stud Poker

Auto Date Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

poker comes in many varieties. Texas Hold ‘Em is the most popular variant these days. But there are other poker games to play online or in the casino.

Seven Card Stud is very different from Texas Hold ‘Em. Each player must “ante” up a minimum bet, and then is dealt two cards down and one card up. The goal is to make the best poker hand out of five cards. The first round of betting takes place after the first three cards are dealt. The lowest card face up “brings in” the action - meaning that player must make a minimum bet.

Three more cards are dealt, one at a time, face up to the players who remain. A round of betting follows each deal, with the highest card or hand showing on the table the first to act. The seventh card is dealt face down, so the remaining players have seven cards, four of which are exposed to other players and three that are face down. Whichever player makes the best hand, wins the pot.

Stud requires more sophisticated analysis than Texas Hold ‘Em since each player must study all the exposed cards in relation to their own hand. In Hold ‘Em, all players are using the same community cards which limits what hands can be made. In Stud, the possibilities are more difficult to determine because there is less information available about what cards each player is using to make a hand.

As with many poker games, Stud has its own variations. It can be played high/low with the highest and lowest hand splitting the pot as in Omaha 8. At home games, Stud sometimes uses wild cards, or creative variations like Chicago, where the highest hidden spade splits the pot with the highest hand.
