Ukulele Tab: Learn To Play Scarborough Fair

Auto Date Monday, December 29th, 2008

In this ukulele lesson we will use the uke to play Scarborough Fair as a melody. You don’t need to know sheet music at all so let’s start!

Scarborough Fair is an English ballad and dates back to late medieval times. Scarborough was a host to a huge forty-five day fair.

The name Scarborough Fair is now used for a music festival held every year in Scarborough.

The first verse has the lyrics:

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

In articles like this one I use my own form of ukulele tab to be sure that the tabs are readable on article sites.

You can find the more common ukulele tab staff on my site with ukulele tab, guitar tablature and free sheet music.

The string with the highest pitch on the ukulele is usually an A and is called the first string. This is the string nearest your feet when you play.

The first number indicates the fret. The second number tells you which string to play. Here is the first part of the melody with ukulele tab:

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?

23 23 01 31 01 02 12 02 23

23 indicates that you play the third string while pressing down the second fret with a left hand finger. 01 means that you play the first string without pressing down a left hand finger. It is called to play on the open first string.

We will not dicuss how to play with your right hand. I suggest that you play the notes with your right hand thumb but do as you like.

The ukulele tab notation doesn’t tell you the length of the notes. I leave it up to you to figure this out out.

Let’s play the next ukulele tab:

Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme

01 31 51 31 01 21 32 01

51 means that you press down a left hand finger on the fifth fret on the first string. I haven’t told you anything about which left hand finger to press down on the frets on your ukulele yet.

You can of course use your first finger for all the notes but the best way to use your left hand fingers is to play the notes on the first fret with your first finger, the notes on the second fret with your long finger and the notes on your third fret with your ring finger.

It might be difficult at first but if you practice this fingerings it will actually be easier for you to find the right notes. You don’t even have to look at your fingers to find the right fret if you get used to this way of playing.

The notes on the fifth fret can be played with your ring finger as well.

Here comes the next ukulele tab and lyrics:

Remember me to one who lives there

51 51 51 31 01 01 32 12 02 03

The last ukulele tab and lyrics comes now:

She once was a true love of mine

23 01 32 12 02 23 03 23

Now you can play Scarborough Fair on your ukulele with ukulele tab!

Actually you can play this melody with the use of the above ukulele tab notation on a guitar also. The first three strings on a guitar are tuned the same way but not in the same pitch.

The best way to learn this melody is to take one line at a time and learn it by heart.

When you know the melody by heart you have the pleasure of being able to play the melody anytime and anywhere!

Buying a Piano - Get the FAQs!

Auto Date Monday, December 29th, 2008

As a piano teacher I want to be a resource for parents when they have questions. The most frequently asked questions I get from parents are about buying a piano. Read this article to learn how to choose the piano that’s right for your family.

I want to enroll my child in piano lessons. When should I buy a piano?

Think Susie can learn to play piano without one? Don’t hold your breath. Taking piano lessons without a piano is like learning to swim without water. Don’t wait to purchase a piano or keyboard if you have enrolled or are planning to enroll your child in piano lessons. There are many options for every budget. My advice is to get the best instrument you can afford because pianos hold their value. If your child later decides that piano is not their cup of tea, you can always sell it for about what you paid for it. Another reason to get the best piano or keyboard you can afford is that quality matters. You can safely compare this to your golf game. How much more fun is it to play with a good set up clubs over a bargain set that lacks power and precision.

What’s the difference between a piano and a keyboard?

An acoustical piano is what your great grandmother and Beethoven learned to play on, only now they’re built in a factory. A factory built acoustical piano is a great investment at a practical cost. There are many types new and used. From smallest to largest they are: spinet, console, upright, baby grand and grand. You can also rent a piano. Usually the rent is applied to the purchase price of the piano should you decide to buy it within six months.

A keyboard is an electronic instrument with many features such as recording and the ability to play with headphones. Again, get the best one you can afford. I recommend a minimum of 76 keys. A full keyboard is 88 keys. This is important because learning to play the piano involves “geography.” Reading piano music is comparable to reading a map of the piano keyboard. Other key features that affect playing quality and enjoyment are touch sensitivity, weighted keys, and hammered-action keys, which imitate the lever action of an acoustical piano. Touch sensitivity is a minimum requirement. If you are considering a used keyboard, check to see if it is still under warranty before you make your offer. Also, electronic keyboards do not need to be tuned.

How do I know which is better for my family?

If volume is a factor for you, get a keyboard with headphones. With this feature your piano student can still practice while his sister is doing her homework. If space is a factor, you should also consider a keyboard. Another advantage of a keyboard is that you can take it with you to grandma’s house. She’ll love it!

If, however, you are looking for a beautiful piano to fill your home with music, go for an acoustical piano. You can’t beat this choice for playing quality, inspiration and enjoyment.

Why should I purchase a piano for my child?

The answer to this is simple. Students who go on to excel in piano have had a quality piano or keyboard to practice on at home. Does the purchase of a piano guarantee your child’s piano success? No. But I can guarantee that without a quality instrument your child will not achieve their musical potential. So go ahead - take the leap! Don’t wait to give your child the gift of music.

Piano Chord Charts and How to Use Them

Auto Date Monday, December 29th, 2008

Piano chord charts are used to help you keep track of chord changes. And the cool thing about them is that you can use them for improvisation and composition. Here’s how.

Let’s say you have an 8-bar phrase to play. There are no chord symbols yet so you don’t know what chords you’ll be playing. You just have 8-bars in front of you. The first thing you need to know is the time signature. For our purposes here, we’ll keep it simple and use 3/4 or 4/4 time.

Now let’s select 4/4 time for our 8-bar phrase. Now we know the meter but what about the chords? Here’s where we can jot down chord progressions for either improvisation or composition. For example, you may want to begin something in the Key of F Major. Having made that decision, you know that you have 6 chords to use right away. These are F Major, G minor, A minor. B flat Major, C 7, and D minor.

All that’s left to do now is begin your piece in the Key of F Major. We usually start with the F Major chord itself so you now know that your first bar or 2 will be the F Major chord. But now a problem arises - how do you fill up the rest of the space? By using an 8-bar phrase to begin with, you don’t have to worry about filling up a lot of space and taking forever to complete a section of music.

For instance, let’s suppose we want to chart out an 8-bar phrase for improvisation purposes. We know what chords we will be working with. Now it’s just a matter of fooling around on the piano and playing with the chord choices. You may want to place a chord change at every 2-measures. You can even use 2 chords for the entire 8-bar phrase such as F Major and B flat Major.

The whole point of the piano chord charts is to have a tool that will help you navigate what chords to play and when to change chords.

Safety Training: The Need For Security

Auto Date Thursday, December 25th, 2008

Safety training is something that every person in the world should have. Of course, this isn’t a logical option. So, that means that those who can have this type of training should have it. Safety training is not only about protecting you and your loved ones, but also the strangers that happen into your life. Because you just do not know when an accident will happen, you need to be prepared ahead of time. This is the most crucial part of safety training: getting it in time.

Safety training is more than just learning how to take care of a cut or a scrape. There are a number of different things that you will be needing to know how to do in your everyday life. For example, you may need to learn to help someone who is choking. You may need to help someone who has just fallen. You may also need to help someone who is having a heart attack or can no longer breath on their own.

Safety training can be taught through a variety of ways. For many people, it is taught through hospitals, doctor’s offices and through community centers. You can also find the training you need from organizations like the Red Cross. The point is not really where to get the training or what training to get, but to just get moving on it. Learn what you can so that you can help someone who is in need whenever it is needed.

Whether you need safety training for your job or because you realize the value in having it, there are many forms to learn. For example, you may learn what to do with chemicals or you may find out what is the best way to pick up a heavy box. On top of this, you will want to learn things that deal with your specific needs in the personal world such as food safety training. Safety training is necessary and helpful throughout lifes’ many adventures.

Why change In GRE postponed until 2007

Auto Date Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

The ETS, which contemplating the change in GRE, even announced the date of implementation once again given the relief of shy to the students by delaying its implementation for exactly a year. The highly anticipated and complex changes to the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) will begin in October 2007 rather than October 2006, a whole year later in the fall of 2007, company officials announce last week.

Another wave of changes has swept over the Graduate Record Examination according to the Educational Testing Service, which, beginning in October 2006 delayed until October 2007, will affect the approximately 400,000 U.S. students who take the test annually. “It will undergo its biggest overhaul from October 2007 in the 57 years of GRE history. ETS believes the delay will better serve test takers and graduate institutions across the country as ETS transitions from the current computer- and paper-based forms of the test to the new Internet-based (iBT) version.

“The higher education and graduate communities are excited about the revised GRE,” explains Mari Pearlman, Senior Vice President of ETS’s Higher Education Division. “They worked with us to create this revised test, and they are looking forward to using this test. The new launch schedule will enable us to complete the expansion of our Internet-based testing operations worldwide.”

The change was announced last year, but details have not been released until now. These changes will impact important aspects of the test such as score range; the type of questions asked how the officials will evaluate the scores, and more.

Madeline Hamblin, director of the Office of Graduate Affairs at the University, said that the delay was sensible. “I think it was a good move,” she said. “It would not be wise to start a new test before test centers were set up.”

Test development, design and field testing will continue for the new GRE test. The new iBT delivery platform is already being used to deliver the innovative new Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®) exam worldwide. ETS plans to improve student access to its tests by adding thousands of testing sites worldwide in the next two years.

The GRE exam measures critical thinking, analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and are not related to any specific field of study.

Changes to the exam included: greater emphasis on higher cognitive skills and less dependence on vocabulary, expansion of computer based tasks, on-screen four-function calculators with square root features, and more focused questions to ensure analytical writing.

Highlights of Changes which ETS Considering: >>> The new GRE General Test will be slightly over four hours long, an increase from the current two-and-a-half-hour exam. It will also no longer be offered in a computer-adaptive format, where the difficulty of the test is determined by the test taker’s right or wrong answers. Instead, it will be offered in a linear format, in which every student takes the same exam.

>>> Unlike the current exam, each version of the revised GRE General Test will be used only once, and no test takers will encounter the same questions on different dates. Instead of continuous testing, the exam will be given 29 times a year worldwide. The number of administrations in any given region will depend on the test volumes in that region.

>>> The revised GRE General Test will be administered in the ETS global network of Internet-based test centers and through Thomson Prometric, the world’s largest computer-based testing network.

Changes in the Verbal and Quantitative Score Scales

The new score scales will have 40-50 scale points. The scales will increase in one-point increments and will be centered between 120 and 179. The actual score ranges will be finalized in 2006 based on field test results.

>>> A concordance table to compare old and new Verbal and Quantitative scores will be available.

>>> The analytical writing section will continue to be scored using a six-point holistic scale.

‘These changes are intended to make the GRE General Test a more accurate gauge of how qualified prospective students are to do graduate-level work,” David Payne, Executive Director of the GRE Program in ETS’ Higher Education Division explained recently to the Signal. “We’ll also offer more interpretive information to graduate deans and faculty, including providing access to test takers’ essay responses on the Analytical Writing section.” Have a Question ? Common Courtesy In Cruising

Auto Date Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

You don’t need a Miss Manners at sea to know there are some basic, common sense rules of etiquette for cruising. No, there is no handbook on it, but the key words here are “common sense.” For some less thoughtful folks onboard, taking a vacation means taking a break from using their brains.

Picture a cruise ship like a floating village or small town at sea. As with any unfamiliar place you go to, you should get to know the lay of the land, so to speak. No one is going to be just like you; people from all over the world, from different cultures and religions are sharing the same floating space as you are. Everyone should learn how to live in harmony for this short stay so that all of you will have the best vacation possible.

Some cruisers have been to their share of ports and know what to do. However, newbie’s need to pay some attention to their surroundings. Read the literature about the ship’s activities. And if there is any doubt about something, ask a member of the cruise ship’s personnel. Now, let’s talk about some of those unspoken shipboard “rules:”

Cool it with the complaints - You are on vacation! Nothing is more unattractive than a grown-up whining like a child over something like waiting in line. You know that saying “When in Rome?” Well, it is your vacation. No worries, no deadlines, no being late to anything … you’re on a ship and nothing on board is going anywhere. Say hi to the people next to you; challenge someone to a game of paper, scissors, rock to break up the monotony.

Respect the Dress Code Guidelines - Cruise ships will often post some clothing guidelines for dinner or live entertainment for that day. If you don’t follow the guidelines, you will not be thrown off the ship. However, you would feel mighty uncomfortable wearing your Bermuda shorts and flip flops to a semi-formal dinner or dance.

Say so long to the seat savers and line cutters- It is a bit exasperating to take the time to arrive at a decent hour to catch the next lounge act only to have a sea of coats draped over chairs and no bodies in the seats. And line cutters, shame on you. It is one thing for you to stand in line and have your spouse join you after a quick trip to the rest room. It is a whole new ballgame letting in your twenty newfound friends from the poker tables cut in line.

No hogging of the gym equipment/hot tub/lounge chairs/computers, etc. - There are possibly several thousand other people who at some point want to use stationary bike or hot tub privileges. Be mindful of others who are discreetly waiting without complaint for their turn.

Designated smoking areas - There are specific areas just for smokers on board. Do not be selfish and light up at the dining room table while others are eating. Here’s a big clue: if you see ash trays, you can light up.

These unspoken rules sound perfectly logical don’t they? Yet, some cruisers forget themselves in their quest for a good time and other people suffer for it. If you are unsure of something, ask. Let your common sense rule. And don’t worry, it won’t get in the way of your good time.
